There are many definitions of what cloud computing is and what it does. The best and simplest definitions we have come across are from the “Cloud Computing for Dummies” book and web site. It encapsulates simply and effectively what cloud computing is about. We’ve summarised the key definitions below. The items below are direct quotes from the web site with only added bold where we think worthy of highlight.

“Cloud Computing is the next stage in the Internet’s evolution, providing the means through which everything — from computing power to computing infrastructure, applications, business processes to personal collaboration — can be delivered to you as a service wherever and whenever you need it.”
“Cloud Services includes the delivery of software, infrastructure, and storage over the Internet (either as separate components or a complete platform) based on user demand.”
The key parts to this definition are the business benefits from the “based on user demand” so you can scale easily and quickly as you grow or contract your business with no penalties; and this “delivered to you as a service wherever and whenever you need it”. But they key, for us, is doing all that and providing the means through which you can deliver business processes or discover new and better ways of doing things to save you time and money.
